Volunteers Update February 2014
We said goodbye to Tammie last month, who’d been volunteering in the shop since last March. We will miss her, but will no doubt be seeing her soon as she begins volunteering at the Broomhouse Centre café!
As always January was a fairly quiet month, but we have had big fruit orders for Murrayburn Primary, and we are still making up a good number of Food Bags for the Foodbank.
Things seem to be picking up a bit now and hopefully as the weather brightens we will see more customers. Soup bags and recipe bags are still selling well and the shop volunteers are doing a great job in engaging the customers and chatting about what we do.
The new till is working well and although it has taken a bit of getting used to, overall we think it has made life a little bit easier for our shop volunteers!
It has been decided that the shop will close for two weeks in the summer, from 7 July. This hopefully will help to avoid problems we’ve had in previous years with clashing staff holidays, and lower numbers of volunteers due to the school holidays.
We are always on the lookout for new volunteers, particularly in the shop, but also for the cookery sessions, and for general admin and promotion. If you know of anyone who might like to volunteer, or if any shop customers seem interested, please pass on their details to Caroline.
New Staff Member:
Kirsty, our new Community Development Worker, started work with us at the start of the year. Some of you will have met her on Mondays and Tuesdays or seen her at our Volunteer Night out! She is working with Jackie on our Food & Fitness sessions, and we are very happy to have her on board J
Food & Fitness:
These sessions have all now started!
Exercise classes, with crèche – Mondays 10 – 11am
Cookery classes, with crèche – Tuesdays 10am – 12noon
Cookery classes, without crèche – Tuesdays 1.30 – 3pm
If anyone is enquiring about these sessions or if you are interested yourself, please speak to Jackie or Kirsty!
Walking group is still on every Friday – all welcome, just meet at the shop at 10am! The group goes for a walk that takes about an hour, before coming back for a cup of tea.
Thanks to grant funding we are getting a professional filmmaker to come in to make a film of who we are and what we do. We will use this as a tool to raise awareness of all our services to health professionals and to show potential participants what goes on in the shop/cooking/exercise/drop-ins etc. The filming will be taking place on Mon 24th Feb. It would be great to have some of you give your thoughts on volunteering – what 25th you do and what you enjoy. The main shop filming will be on the Tues – if you’re happy to be filmed, can you let Caroline or Lucy know please!
